OEM Lithium Polymer Battery Structure Overview
The OEM lithium polymer battery is constructed by manufacturers by stacking electrode layers in a laminated pouch system on the same side with tabs. To begin with, the cathode and anode foils are stacked in a parallel arrangement, and the current collector tabs of each are placed on the same side to make the routing of external connections easier. They then place a microporous separator between electrode layers to ensure ionic isolation but permit the transfer of lithium ions. Then, the whole stack is repaired by technicians using precision alignment fixtures and then handed over to the next stage of the process.
Preparation of Material System and Electrode
The cathode is made by coating lithium metal oxide active materials onto aluminum foil by the producers, and the anode is made by applying graphite-based slurry onto copper foil. In the meantime, they combine conductive carbon and polymer binders into a stable slurry system to provide even dispersion. They also dry the coated electrodes at controlled temperatures to eliminate residual solvents and calendering to enhance consistency of density and surface adhesion. They then cut the electrodes to specified widths to fit OEM dimensions.
Tab Arrangement and Structural Integration
Technicians place cathode and anode tabs on the same side of the cell and weld them either with ultrasonic or resistance welding techniques to provide low-resistance electrical connections. In addition, they insulate the tab exit region with layers of insulation to avoid short-circuiting in subsequent sealing processes. Following the welding, operators then pass the combined tab structure through one exit zone of the pouch, and they take care to keep the spacing to prevent mechanical stress on internal layers. In the meantime, they check the accuracy of alignment prior to the commencement of operations.
Cycling and Standard Control of Formation
Technicians start formation cycling to produce electrochemical interfaces and stabilize internal SEI layers under controlled charge-discharge profiles. Then, they perform aging tests to check the stability of voltages and internal impedance characteristics with time. Lastly, quality teams conduct dimensional inspection, weld strength test, insulation resistance test, and leakage test as per IEC 62133 and UN38.3 standards, and each OEM lithium polymer battery is subjected to high manufacturing and transportation safety standards.
