Overview
Cylindrical LiPo Battery Structure Overview
The cylindrical LiPo battery is built by manufacturers with a rolled electrode architecture that is encased in a rigid metal casing. They roll the cathode, anode, and separator into a tightly controlled jelly-roll structure, and then they are inserted into a cylindrical shell. In the meantime, engineers center the current collectors to ensure uniform internal contact distribution. Then, they attach the electrode assembly to the housing and ready the cell to be filled with electrolyte under controlled environmental conditions.
Material Composition and Electrode System
The cathode layer is prepared by coating lithium metal oxide compounds on aluminum foil, and the anode layer is prepared by coating graphite-based slurry on copper foil. Moreover, they add a microporous polyethylene and polypropylene separator film to allow ionic pathways but prevent direct contact between electrodes. Moreover, they choose an organic carbonate-based electrolyte with lithium salts, including LiPF6, and they maintain chemical stability when injecting and operating. In the meantime, the cylindrical metal casing is made of steel or aluminum alloy to offer structural integrity and resistance to pressure.
Electrode Winding and Cell Assembly Process
Technicians cut coated electrodes into fine strips, and then they stack them with separator layers, and then start the process of winding. They then wind the layered structure into a small cylindrical shape with automated winding equipment. Then they place the jelly-roll core in the metal can and weld the bottom terminal. They then attach the top cap assembly, and they close the structure with the use of laser or resistance welding. Meanwhile, they are kept in alignment to ensure accuracy and prevent internal deformation during compression.
Cycling and Industrial Standards Control
To trigger electrochemical reactions and stabilize the solid electrolyte interphase layer within the cell, engineers start formation cycling. After that, they perform aging processes at controlled temperatures to observe voltage stability and impedance characteristics. Lastly, quality teams conduct dimensional checks, internal resistance checks, and safety checks. During production, they adhere to IEC 62133 and UN38.3 standards, and they test mechanical strength, electrical stability, and transport safety requirements of cylindrical LiPo battery manufacturing.
